El Volcán Arenal

This weekend our group went on an excursion to The Fortuna Waterfall and a volcano named Arenal. We had an amazing time! Becky and I already have plans to come back sometime.

we took a dip in there too. it was cold!

this is what we saw when we pulled up to the hotel:

here's the view from our hotel room (don't be jealous now...)

The next day (Sunday) we went on a hike to get closer to the volcano-- as close as you can safely go, anyway.

¡Monos! (monkeys)... not in a zoo

Look closely... there are little ants carrying leaves :)

a flower that only lives for a day... ¡qué triste!

our tour guide told us about some of the medicinal plants in the rain forest

Arenal

here's a video of the volcano spewing! if we were close enough it would look more like lava...

amazing view!

Come fly with me...

This past weekend we went on an excursion to Monteverde, a cloud forest, (a specific kind of rain forest). We went on a zip line canopy tour of the rain forest. Basically we were strapped into harnesses
and hooked to a pulley which takes you across cables across the rain forest. It was pretty awesome.

¡Estoy en Costa Rica!

Hola amigos, regreso para contarles de mis aventuras extranjeras.

I arrived in San José Saturday night. Which means I have only been here 3 days, which seems unbelievable. We already started classes yesterday-- talk about hitting the ground running. The next five weeks, my classes are Advanced Grammar and Advanced Oral & Written Expression.

May begins the rainy season in Costa Rica (it's winter here), which means there's lots of rain. It usually doesn't start raining till the afternoon, but when it rains, it pours. You can imagine that it's pretty humid. Not too hot though.

Our host family is great. They are very personable and helpful. Marixa and Guido have 4 children: Marcela, Guido (Guido hijo as Marixa calls him), Silvia y Pedro. There is also a German exchange student who lives there, his name is Alex and he has been there for 10 months already. The house is really nice. I'll put pictures up later....

hasta luego
